The Madras High Court has came down heavily on an Advocate for her unruly behaviour. The Court made it clear that ‘Advocates aren’t above Law’, and has sought initiation of suo-moto disciplinary action against him.
The High Court remarked that such acts of unruly conduct in public demean the legal fraternity. It observed:
“Advocates should not take law into their own hands on the premise that they are the custodian of law; on the contrary, the advocates being the custodian of law, are bound to act within the legal framework .If such incidents come to the notice of the Bar Council through visual or print media, then the Bar Council should initiate suo moto action, without waiting for any formal written complaint.”
A single bench of Justice M Dhandapani made these strict observations while considering the anticipatory bail application of a lawyer, who allegedly slipped into a rift with the Policemen over Lockdown violation and was accused of publicly intimidating them. They had said to have stopped her vehicle for travelling in violation of lockdown. The act was captured on camera and did rounds in media.
