Recently, the Supreme Court witnessed a tense exchange involving Arun Ramchandra Hublikar, who sought an inquiry into the conduct of former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi.

The Bench, comprising Justice Bela M. Trivedi and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, declined to entertain Hublikar’s plea and subsequently ordered his removal from the courtroom due to his disruptive behaviour.

Hublikar, who claims to hold both an LLB and an LLM, contended that Justice Gogoi improperly interfered in a judicial decision that had favoured him, resulting in adverse consequences related to his employment termination. He alleged that the former Chief Justice’s intervention constituted a violation of his rights. However, the Court found no merit in Hublikar’s claims, stating, “We are inclined to impose costs. Do not mention the name of the judge. Your case is devoid of substance”. In response, Hublikar expressed frustration, asserting, “How can it be said there is nothing? This is injustice against me. I am entitled to justice before my demise”.

Despite Hublikar’s appeals, the Court remained resolute in its decision, reiterating, “We cannot interfere. All your petitions are dismissed”. As the situation escalated, Justice Trivedi directed security personnel to escort Hublikar from the courtroom, warning him, “if you speak another word, you will be removed”.

Apex Court’s firm rejection of Hublikar’s petition highlighted the absence of any substantial basis for investigating Justice Gogoi’s actions. Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra, present during the proceedings, attempted to counsel Hublikar on the futility of his position. Hublikar’s disbelief at the dismissal was palpable, questioning the Court’s authority.

Justice Gogoi, retired from the Supreme Court in November 2019, currently serves as a member of the Rajya Sabha.
