A recent survey for the 2024 State of Cyber Security in Law Report has disclosed that a substantial 81% of Australian law firms have fallen victim to phishing attacks. This marks a 14% increase from the previous year, according to cybersecurity provider AUCyber. Additionally, attempts at cyberattacks have risen by 7%, reaching 21%.

Among the 140 firms surveyed, 56% identified cybersecurity as their primary business concern. The report highlights a significant rise in spoofing attacks from 23% to 35%, malware attacks from 17% to 27%, and identity-based attacks from 25% to 35%.

Despite the growing threats, 18% of respondents believe their firms’ cybersecurity measures are insufficient. AUCyber CEO Peter Maloney emphasized the urgency for law firms to enhance their cyber defences. “The fact that 18% of firms feel unprotected and 26% are unsure of their security measures is alarming,” Maloney stated. He urged firms to invest in robust detection and protection solutions, staff training, and comprehensive incident response plans.

ALPMA CEO Emma Elliott echoed the need for continuous vigilance, noting that cybersecurity requires ongoing management and review. “Our research underscores the critical need for law firms to bolster their cyber defences to safeguard client data and ensure operational integrity,” she said.
